Johan Mezger – The Medical Pioneer Who Gave Massage a Scientific Foundation

Johan Georg Mezger (1838–1909)
The Medical Pioneer Who Gave Massage a Scientific Foundation
Johan Georg Mezger was a Dutch physician whose groundbreaking work helped transform massage from a folk practice into a respected medical treatment. Trained in medicine in Amsterdam, Mezger was among the first to apply massage systematically in clinical settings—especially in treating injuries, joint disorders, and neurological conditions.
What set Mezger apart was his scientific approach. He adopted and refined techniques from Swedish Gymnastics and gave them clear medical terminology in French, such as effleurage (stroking), pétrissage (kneading), tapotement (percussion), and friction. These terms are still used worldwide in massage training today.
Mezger worked with royalty and high-profile clients across Europe, gaining widespread recognition. His success helped legitimize massage therapy and inspired the development of modern physiotherapy.
Thanks to Mezger, massage became more than relaxation—it became medicine.
