What It Means to Be a Good Leader
Leadership is not a title; it is a responsibility. To lead well is to inspire, to guide, and to create an environment where others can thrive. In the International Massage Association (IMA), my role is not only to lead massage therapists, Massage influencers and teachers, but also to oversee our many branches: IMA Massage Masterclasses, IMA Massage Library, the IMA Online Massage Museum, our Massage Teacher Courses, and the annual IMA Best Massage Promotion Video Competition, which celebrates creativity and excellence by awarding prizes to the best massage videos worldwide. Each of these initiatives is built on the same foundation: the belief that good leadership can uplift an entire profession.
One of the most unique aspects of IMA’s journey is that our activities are primarily built through voluntary contributions. People from around the world have generously given their time, skills, and energy to help grow IMA’s mission. As a leader, it is a delicate balance to accept this help with gratitude while at the same time ensuring that our volunteers are not overburdened or burned out. Leadership, in this context, means protecting the well-being of those who give so much, while honoring their contributions and making sure their efforts are meaningful. I am deeply thankful to every person who has supported IMA over the years. Without them, none of these achievements would have been possible.

So, what characterizes a good leader in my opinion?
1. Vision and Purpose
A strong leader sees beyond the present moment. They set a clear vision and direction, so the team knows not just what to do, but why it matters. A leader must create meaning and a shared purpose that motivates people to give their best.
2. Integrity and Responsibility
Trust is the currency of leadership. Integrity means being honest, transparent, and consistent in both words and actions. A leader takes responsibility, not only when things go well, but also when challenges arise.
3. Empathy and Support
Great leaders listen. They understand the needs, dreams, and struggles of the people they lead. Empathy allows leaders to connect with their team on a human level, offering support and encouragement when needed.
4. Empowerment and Growth
Leadership is not about control but about empowerment. A good leader gives others the tools, confidence, and opportunities to grow. They celebrate achievements and encourage continuous learning.
5. Courage and Innovation
The world changes quickly, and leaders must be willing to innovate and take risks. Courage means daring to take new paths, even when the outcome is uncertain, in order to move the organization forward.
6. Leading by Example
Actions speak louder than words. A true leader embodies the values they want to see in others—discipline, dedication, respect, and professionalism. Leading by example inspires trust and loyalty.
These are the principles I try to live by every day in my work with IMA. Whether it is guiding a world massage champion, designing a masterclass, curating the Massage Library, building the Online Museum, running the Teacher Courses, celebrating creativity through the Best Massage Promotion Video Competition, or working alongside our incredible volunteers, my goal is to lead in a way that empowers others and strengthens the massage profession worldwide.
To be a good leader is to serve others, to lift them up, and to create a legacy that continues long after your own work is done. That is the kind of leadership I strive for and I will continue doing so and I look forward seeing you all either at the 2026 World Championship in Copenhagen or elsewhere in the Massage Profession.
