The Story behind Senior Massage
Senior massage, also referred to as geriatric massage, has its roots in the broader history of massage therapy and the recognition of the unique healthcare needs of the elderly.
Throughout history, various cultures incorporated massage or touch-based therapies for the elderly as part of traditional healthcare practices. However, the formalization of geriatric massage as a distinct modality gained prominence in the latter part of the 20th century.
As the aging population increased and healthcare professionals recognized the benefits of massage for seniors, specialized training programs and guidelines were developed. Massage therapists began to tailor their techniques to address the specific health concerns, mobility issues, and comfort levels of older individuals.
Today, senior massage is widely practiced in various healthcare settings, including senior care facilities, hospitals, and wellness centers. It aims to improve circulation, joint flexibility, and overall well-being for the elderly, often incorporating gentle, soothing strokes to accommodate the unique needs of older clients.
At the International Massage Associations World Championship in Massage, senior massage is not a category, but it is very often done and given within especially the categories of Wellness Massage and Freestyle Massage.
