Professor Anatoly Andreevich Biryukov – The Shaper of the Russian school of classical massage
The 12th of November 2025 marked the memorial day of Anatoly Andreevich Biryukov (June 12, 1930 – November 12, 2020). A bust of the great massage teacher was unveiled on the Walk of Fame at the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism (GTSOLIFK), accompanied by many warm and heartfelt words.
With the passing of Anatoly Andreevich, an era has come to an end. For the world of massage, it was a time of debate and discussion, of continuous growth and increasing diversity — a time defined by the pursuit of uniqueness and the quest for technical perfection.
Professor Biryukov was the last truly great teacher to stand on the podium of sports massage. It was through his participation that the structure of the Russian school of classical massage took shape, and he contributed to the development of a scientific approach to massage in both the United States and Europe. And this is only a small part of his contribution to sports science.
Anatoly Andreevich lived a difficult life but through all challenges and hardships, he carried with him love — a love for massage.
