History of Swedish Massage
Swedish Massage is a popular type of massage that originated in Sweden. It involves long, gliding strokes, kneading, and circular movements on the muscles to promote relaxation and improve blood circulation.
Per Henrik Ling is the founder of Swedish massage. He was a Swedish fencing master and gymnastics instructor who developed the massage techniques and system known as Swedish massage in the early 19th century.
Johan Georg Mezger was a Dutch physician who further developed and formalized the techniques of Swedish massage. He assigned specific movements and strokes used in the massage, and many of these strokes are now commonly associated with Swedish massage. Mezger contributed greatly to the recognition and acceptance of Swedish massage as a therapeutic practice.
In 2017 Swedish Massage was one of the categories when the International Massage Association (IMA) hosted the first World Championship in Massage. www.worldchampionship-massage.com
