The life of Ana Malachowski – An IMA story
The life of Ana (Kerr-Hansen) Malachowski is not merely a series of events; it is a masterclass in the alchemy of turning leaden trauma into golden purpose. To look at her today—a world-traveled judge and the owner of the World Massage Festival—is to see a woman who has not only survived the fire but has learned to command its warmth.
The Quiet Storm of Childhood
Ana’s world was quiet before it was ever loud. By the age of five, while most children were learning to ride bicycles, Ana was learning the cold language of hospitals. She underwent double hernia surgery and open-heart surgery, facing mortality before she could even grasp the concept of it.
It was during these formative years that she was diagnosed with severe hearing loss. Growing up hard of hearing in an environment defined by neglect meant that Ana lived in a literal and metaphorical silence, forced to navigate a world that didn’t care to make itself heard to her.
Her relationship with “home” was equally precarious. The concept of a safe haven was twice reduced to ash. First, a childhood home was claimed by faulty electrical wiring. Years later, her high school home in Middletown, CA, was devoured by the relentless “Valley Fire.” For Ana, “home” wasn’t a structure; it was whatever survived the flames.
Resilience Through the Reach
Despite a grueling upbringing, Ana crossed the graduation stage in 2000. She was a striver by nature, balancing the grit of police academy training at a community college with the artistic eye of a wedding photographer for The Dawson Studios. From the high-stakes streets of San Francisco to the elegant vineyards of Napa, she captured the joy of others while privately navigating her own darkness.
The breaking point—and the turning point—came from the seat of a moving vehicle. After being thrown from a car by an abusive partner, the physical trauma served as a final, brutal catalyst. Ana decided that her life belonged solely to her. She moved to Southern California to start over, eventually finding the man who would become the father of her two sons.

The Healer’s Path
Life, however, continued to test her. Ana endured the heartbreak of three miscarriages and the frightening diagnosis of multiple seizure disorders and chronic medical conditions. But where others might have retreated, Ana reached out. At age 30, she found her true calling in the power of touch, becoming a Massage Therapist and founding Artistic Hands Massage Therapy.
Her capacity for love proved as boundless as her resilience. Even as she navigated the eventual end of a 13-year marriage, she opened her home and heart to four teenagers, ages 16 and 17, choosing to provide the stability and care she had been denied in her own youth.
From Remission to the Hall of Fame
When cancer came for her shortly after her divorce, it found a woman who had already stared down death multiple times. She beat it within a year. By 2016, Ana was no longer just a therapist; she was a pioneer. She began teaching her self-authored Aquatic Bodywork class on the international stage, transforming her relationship with physical limitation into a specialized mastery of water and movement.
Today, Ana Malachowski is a titan in her field. With over 200 certifications, she is a recognized master of Medical Massage and Aquatic therapy. Her honors speak for themselves:
2023: Inducted into the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame.
2024: Recipient of the prestigious Bonnie Prudden Award.
Current: Owner and Director of the World Massage Festival and the American Massage Championships. Here she is with Crystal Floyd Stoots who is her indispensable support.

From a child who couldn’t hear the world to an international judge who is listened to by thousands, Ana’s story is a testament to the fact that the environment does not define the soul. She travels the globe not to escape her past, but to fulfill a singular, beautiful mission: to ensure that every person she encounters is left better than how she found them.
