May Au, Hong Kong/England
Latest Massage Therapist participating at the World Massage Championship in Denmark next year is the winner of the Open National Massage Championship in England May Au from Hong Kong. The International massage Association has asked her to tell about herself:
I was born and raised in Hong Kong, a place where the massage profession is often misunderstood and undervalued. Five years ago, I left behind my career as a dancer and moved to the UK. Despite this bold step, I found myself lost, struggling to find direction and confidence in a foreign country where the language, culture, and my past identity no longer aligned. Last year, my life took a turn when a friend encouraged me to enter the UK Massage Championship 2023. I entered with hesitation, but to my surprise, I won an award. That moment was a turning point—a spark ignited within me.
Massage is not just a career for me; it is a new language, one where I can communicate without words but through the healing power of touch. It is a way to connect with others on a deep, human level, providing not only physical relief but also emotional and spiritual care. This is what drives my passion. After my first win, I realized that massage was not just a profession—it was my calling.
Since then, I have poured my heart into developing my skills, embracing every learning opportunity. This year, I entered the National Massage Championships 2024 and, once again, was honored with an award. That recognition gave me a renewed sense of purpose. It reminded me that the power of touch can heal not just the body but also transform lives.
Coming from a culture where massage is often looked down upon, I have faced ridicule and disrespect from some friends who used hurtful words to describe my work. But this only fueled my determination to prove that this is a profession worthy of honor and respect. For me, it’s not about the awards—it’s about touching people’s lives and showing that massage can be life-changing. With every session I give, I pour my heart into it, aiming not just to relieve pain but to uplift and restore balance to those who seek healing.
I want the world to see that massage is not just a job—it’s a vocation of service, compassion, and profound care. I want to leave a mark not just with my hands but with my heart, showing that I am here not only to compete but to elevate this profession to the respect and recognition it deserves.
I really enjoy the freestyle category of massage because it allows me to creatively help others in different ways. Therefore, I will participate in freestyle again this time.
