Christopher Helou-Decos, Puerto Rico
Latest Massage Therapist to sign up for the World Championship in Massage 2023 is Christopher Helou-Decos from Puerto Rico. IMA has asked him to tell about himself:
Hi, my name is Christopher and I am half-Puerto Rican / half-Lebanese. I grew up in Puerto Rico, Dubai (UAE), Cardiff (UK), and am now residing in Texas (USA).
I was first introduced to massage by my physiotherapist due to injuries sustained from practicing gymnastics. From 2013 onwards, massage and rehabilitation have been professional fields I have felt indebted to and passionate about developing. In 2016, I attended Cardiff Metropolitan University where I have succeeded in obtaining my Bachelors degree in Sports Conditioning, Rehabilitation and Massage (SCRAM) by 2019, as well as my Masters degree in Sport Rehabilitation by 2022. I am grateful for having had the pleasure of learning from my professors as well as working alongside clinics such as Agile Therapy (Cardiff), and DISC (UAE) – who have allowed me to develop my application of skills in different settings, and for a varied population.
Whilst in the US, I am pursuing training in Medical Massage, however my most familiar style of massage would be best described as Sports Massage. I can perform soft tissue mobilisation and neurological techniques from both a basic and an advanced level. I feel passionate about incorporating a holistic approach to tackling soft tissue dysfunctions and injuries, and so will blend rehabilitation and periodisation principles of training in normal settings. My aim is to help as many people as I can by increasing their self efficacy to promote a graduated release from care.
